Prior to sample collection, the nail plate and the surrounding soft tissue should be cleaned with wet
wipe or 70% ethanol to prevent environmental contamination.

SWAB: Swab the infected area from margin to margin in a 10-point zigzag fashion. Use enough pressure to express fluid from within the tissue. Insert the swab all the way to the bottom of the tube that has a liquid medium. Holding the end of the swab shaft, bend it to break at the marked breakpoint. Label the tube with patient's identifiers and date/time of collection.
DRY NAIL:A sterile nail clipper should be used to clip the full thickness nail plate and a sterile curette or scalpel
blade should be used for scraping nail plate. Any small blunt instrument (used in pedicure) can be used
for collection of subungual debris.
